Many significant operations in a business such as maintaining flow of information within the company and marketing the products of the company need printing service. Offset printing is the most commonly used printing technique and knowing about it is therefore helpful and essential.
Offset printing can generate a large number of prints quickly, which makes it more economical than other technologies and also more well known. Therefore good printing service suppliers suggest the use of offset printing for bulk prints.
Offset printing uses oil based ink, which does not mix with water. In offset printing, rubber blankets play a transitional role in copying the image on the paper, which is to begin with on the plate.
First step is to develop the images. Film negatives were used in the earlier times for making images and then duplicating them to aluminum based printing plates. This is no longer needed as the technology exists for making the plates in one step through an image setting system. After this, the plate is attached to a cylinder with the right side facing upwards. Water and ink, in that order, is spread on the image plates. The ink is spread over the image and to restrict it from overflowing, a thin layer of water is spread over the remaining part of the plate.
The image is then taken from the plates to the rubber blanket rolled on another cylinder, so that it is inverted. Afterwards, sheets of paper of desired proportions are put together and the rubber blankets transmit the image to the sheets on a third cylinder, where it comes out as the right side.
Printed sheets are stapled, pasted, or assembled in any other manner as needed and the printing company sends them after giving some finishing touches.
