Theatres are the place where the thrill of story telling begins. They house the stage or screen where the patrons will be swept away in a world of imagination. Visiting these arenas has been a pastime of humans in nearly every recorded civilization.

Beginning in ancient times, there were outdoor stages. The comedies and tragedies of the day took place in the form of rudimentary plays. Entertainment was as much a custom in those cultures as it is today. Evidence of attending a type of playhouse can be found in ancient Asian, Egyptian and Greek civilizations to name a few.

In modern culture, the entertainment industry has gone from an outdoor arena to playhouses all over the city. Live shows are performed in these halls. The shows can be simple sets with a few actors to mechanical props and musical numbers. Small towns may just have one playhouse where a big city can have a hundred or more such auditoriums.

How many types of performances are there for a city to have them in the hundreds? The playhouses can limit the shows that are performed by category. A children’s theater will only show performances for kids. The focus of a gender, race, or sexual preference may be the types of shows at a particular place. Plays spoken in one language could be performed in a separate building.

When the world of performing went from stage only to screen, a whole new arena opened up to the public. Movies houses are where most of modern society goes for performance entertainment. The mass production of film provided an opportunity for buildings to spring up all over the place. The public’s thirst for entertainment is satisfied by having a constant flow of movies and movie houses from which to choose.

These arenas are also divided into categories. One movie house may only show films for kids while another may limit the films another way. The outdoor version is represented in the drive-in theater where movies are watched from the car. Another specialized cinema shows movies that have had a first run at the main places, but aren’t available for home viewing yet. These places charge a fraction of the normal price of movies.

Performance houses can be different in structure as well as content. The live shows have arrangements that compliment the art while the screen versions accommodate the viewer. Most often, stage or screen, the audience faces forward where the acting is happening. A variation in live shows can be where the stage is “in the round”, or center while the chairs surround it. The arena may have balconies to watch from above. For cinemas, the floor is gradually elevated so that all the rows are facing the screen at approximate equal distances.

A mainstay in human civilizations is theatres. People enjoy going to a place where they can be entertained by someone else’s story. The buildings that house these performances come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The types of shows are even more varied. The evolution of the arenas has gone from the ancient stone structures to the multiplexes of today. What will the stage of the future look like?
