Most often hotels are perceived as short term lodgings, conveniently located near or en route to an area one is traveling to for pleasure or business reasons. Here a traveler seeks to spend as little money as possible, provided his minimal cleanliness and quiet sleeping requirements are met. Other unique accommodations are, in whole or in part, the reason for the trip to that area. Holiday or vacation travel is planned around enjoyment of the inn’s on site attractions, or nearby natural attractions as the centerpiece.
In this article we will not be discussing budget, overnight, or limited service accommodations. These have their purpose as stopping places on the way somewhere and may fulfill all that traveler’s needs and expectations. They most likely are not something to design a memorable travel experience around.
May other types will do provide that memorable experience. There is the type that might be found in some scenic and sometimes remote area. It could be in the mountains, on the sea, in a rain forest, in a sunny desert, or near a volcano. The guest can enjoy some quiet relaxation and enjoyment of the scenic view, or engage in activities like skiing, climbing, fishing, hunting, boating, hiking, or biking.
Another type has a unique venue. Guests here can live for a time in lodging in caves, trees, or pyramids, on artificial islands, or underwater. Some are unique architectural anomalies, perhaps designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, or so old they have been in operation since the year 718. There are even several that are shoe shaped, after the tale of the old woman that lived with her children in a shoe.
Other destinations were once survival bunkers, mines, prisons, airliners, railway terminals, and ocean liners. Some are rebuilt annually of snow and ice, or might feature geothermal outdoor spas surrounded by snow.
A third type are those that are self contained and built around some sort of activity. They have facilities owned by the establishment, on site, which will keep the guests occupied. Examples here are resort casinos, golf resorts, conference centers, theme parks, and those at or near horse or auto racetracks and sports stadiums.
Another possibility is health focused lodgings. These may provide spas, massage, integrative medical treatment, healthy cuisine, yoga, fitness routines, stress management strategies, meditation, life style modifications techniques, or spiritual guidance.
Some potential guests appreciate the cultural institutions found in major urban areas. Theaters, museums, concert halls, shopping malls and boutiques are sought. While many people want to escape the crowds, traffic, noise, and pollution of the city while on holiday, others find the 24 hour a day energy of the city invigorating.
Students wanting a place to blow off steam during spring break have destination hotels to serve them. Motorcyclists or other groups can gather for rallies with others having similar hobbies or interests. Sometimes events attract divergent types of individuals with some common pursuit like financial investment or Star Trek television programs or films.
